Not just a coastal scene. Published in 1814, this hand coloured engraving depicts Portoferraio on the Island of Elba—the exact location of Napoleon Bonaparte’s first exile, which began in May of that same year.
This print was commissioned for Earl Spencer (First Lord of the Admiralty), making it a record from the height of the Napoleonic Wars.

Francis Jukes was a premier topographic engraver of the Georgian era, famous for his aquatints. His works are held in major institutions, including the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A).
