Description
Framed original 18th-century color stipple engraving “Clarisse Harlow.”
This was engraved in 1795 by the French artist Pierre Jean Chaillou.
It is the elopement scene from Samuel Richardson’s novel, Clarissa, and has the dialogue of the character Lovelace in both English and French.
English: “Hasten my Dear Clarissa or in a moment we shall be discovered, if you neglect this opportunity, You may never find such an other.”
French: “Hatons nous chere Clarisse dans un moment nous allons être découverts ici, Cet instant doit être celui de votre délivrance Si vous négligez cette occasion vous n’en retrouverez jamais une semblable.”
